He belongs to the same dynasty of prodigiously creative Boyds that include both his parents Arthur Merric and Emma Minnie Boydhis brother Merricand his nephews ArthurGuy and David He then visited Europe where he travelled, thoroughly familiarised himself with most recent developments in Modern art, and mixed with other Australian expatriate artists such as Emanuel Philips Fox and the Queenslander Edith Andersonwhom he married in Paris in Boyd enjoyed early critical acclaim and success - in at the age of 21, his Spring Morning, St Ives, Cornwall had been hung at the Royal Academy in London.
Boyds painting career was interrupted by the First World War. He curated numerous successful exhibitions of Australian art and was responsible for significant acquisitions for the permanent collection. Smith has written a number of authoritative books on Australian art including seminal publications on Arthur Streeton, Sidney Nolan, Russell Drysdale and Charles Blackman.
