The true-life story of lessons learned by a reporter whose first job took her to Boston. The questions that need to be asked What are the opportunities that exist here in Rhode Island for a young journalist to find their groove?
What kind of mentoring positions are available for young students wanting to enter journalism in Rhode Island that will give them access to reporting? How do you teach young journalists the ability to navigate the ever-present politics of the newsroom and the publisher? Under the radar screen When I first went into journalism, as a cub reporter working as a news intern at The Drummer, an alternative weekly in Philadelphia, the editor of the newspaper, Albert Robbins, provided me with innumerable opportunities to test out my writing capabilities.
He made me promise that I would do the same for other young journalists, mentoring them. It is a promise that I have tried to keep. The act of believing in a young writer, giving them the opportunities to grow and blossom, is one of the more fulfilling exploits in my long career in journalism. The success of Shira — and of many others, including Molly Parr — carries with it more reward than any awards can bring.
